NLH - National Library of Guidelines - Non-invasive ventilation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease : management of acute type 2 respiratory failure: "Aims: These guidelines provide a specific focus on the use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in COPD patients with acute type 2 respiratory failure. Although a variety of ventilator units are available, most centres now use bi-level positive airways pressure (BiPAP) units and this guideline refers specifically to this form of ventilatory support.
Intended audience: Clinicians caring for COPD patients in the emergency and ward areas of acute hospitals.
Publication history information: Published October 2008. This document updates and replaces the 2002 British Thoracic Society guidance entitled: 'Non-invasive ventilation in acute respiratory failure'."
